Persia

When the Imbries arrived in Tehran in May, 1924, Persian politics, religion, and economics were in turmoil. Would Persia become a democracy or a theocracy, or remain a monarchy? Bahists, considered Islamic heretics, were under attack. Britain wanted Persia for its own, to protect oil interests and India's borders. Two American companies were vying for oil rights.

On  July 18, 1924, Imbrie was savagely murdered. News of his assassination spread fast and far, from Calcutta to California and China. The first U.S. battleship ever to enter the Persian Gulf brought his body home. Robert and Katherine Imbrie are buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
