Imbrie was with the American Ambulance Field Service in France and the Balkans from December 1915 until the United States entered the war in April 1917. Of Imbrie, a friend wrote, "He loves what he is doing...and he could no more leave this than fly." He was one of the longest-serving volunteer drivers in the war, earned numerous service medals, and left the French Army as a Major, bringing home shrapnel from his ambulance and the rifle he carried in Albania.
