The  Early Years


​Robert Imbrie was born on April 23, 1883 in Washington, D.C. Orphaned at age 13, he was raised by relatives, Charles and Mary Fishbaugh.

After graduation from George Washington University with an LL.B, he earned an LL.M. at Yale University's School of Law, specializing in admiralty law.

​Following a year with the Legal Aid Society, Seaman's Branch in New York City, he opened a law practice in Baltimore, MD. During this period, he traveled widely throughout Europe and in 1911 he went on a safari with Richard Garner, who had been commissioned to capture a gorilla for the New York Zoological Society.
