Katherine's wedding announcement photograph later accompanied news stories of her husband's murder.
Imbrie served two tours in Turkey between 1920 and 1923. During the first tour, he used Constantinople as his base for gathering information on Bolshevik activity. He traveled extensively through the region, often relying on the U.S. Black Sea Fleet.

His second tour brought him to modern Turkey's capital, Angora (Ankara), where he was the only U.S. official. In December, 1922, he married Katherine Gillespie, a Near East Relief worker caring for Greek and Armenian war orphans. Their first home was a boxcar, due to the shortage of housing in Angora.
