“Adventuresomeness is not irresponsibility or vagabondage….It is a zest for living and learning,
a constructive discontent and restlessness, an impatient desire to grow.”

G. Howland Smith, speaking about the Foreign Service, 1930

    Author

I am the author of the first biography of Robert Imbrie--On Distant Service: The Life of the Firs U.S. Foreign Service Officer to be Assassinated (Potomac Books 2020). For many years I was a newspaper columnist, feature writer, and teacher, which suggests I am interested in intriguing stories, and Imbrie's qualifies. His biography helps us understand much of what is happening today in the Middle East and beyond.
